When most people think of what they want in a garden, they usually consider what kind of flowers they want and where they will go. They wonder whether a Japanese maple would look better than a Lilac. Very few people think of what a wonderful role rocks could play. A rock garden design may be the right garden for you.

Perfect for Areas Where Things Don’t Grow

Nothing is more annoying than that area of your yard where everything refuses to grow. You’ve tried everything! Grass dies away and flowers wither within just a couple days. Maybe it’s the soil or perhaps it’s too shady and gets little water. Whatever the reason, a rock garden could be the ideal approach to this sort of problem.

Your rock garden will require little or no maintenance as long as you have built it correctly.  This is important because you do not want the rocks to shift during a rainstorm, or for grass to constantly crop up through the gaps in the stone and need to be weeded away.

When you choose the rocks that you are going to use in your rock garden design, they will need to be placed upon ground that has been properly treated first.  This is because you want to make sure that the water will run off of your rock garden even during the most ferocious downpours.  Of course, you also do not want the rocks to tilt or slide.  You also do not want them to settle and heave during a winter frost.

Building the Rock Garden

Now, there are a couple approaches to implementing your rock garden design. Use the one you like the most. First, you can make the rock look like it is a natural outcropping of bedrock that has been used to cut off an inconvenient slope.  Secondly, you can put together both large and small harmonious groupings of stones; this is actually the more usual design for a rock garden.  If you would like to add a little greenery to your rock garden then simply leave some small gaps between the rocks.  Then, choose a few of your favorite flowers or plants to place in those spots.

A rock garden design has the potential to make your garden even more beautiful than it is already. Or if you haven’t yet built your garden, this kind of design could enhance the beauty of your plan. At any rate, a rock garden design is particularly appealing because they last an extremely long time and need little maintenance.
