Plastic and metal furniture come in many colours; softwood can be painted or stained any colour you like and hardwood comes in all shades of brown from light oak to rich dark mahogany, but it should never be painted only oiled and stained, if you want to.
If you select hardwood, it can be a bit hard on the posterior after a couple hours, so buy a few cushions that match the colour and style of your garden furniture as well. These can be stored inside when not in use or they will become incredibly dirty and if they get wet it can take days for them to dry, during which time they may begin to rot and smell. Hello my wonderful gardening chums, it’s Beatrix Potts your, “Organic Gardening Maven.” As I promised you in the last article in this humble effort we’ll take a look at gardening tools. You may be saying, “My dear Beatrix is a well known fact that gardeners require tools.” And to that we say, of course, and just as you would never use a pitchfork to move a guest from the living room to the dining room neither would we ever want to eviscerate all of the wonderful little beasties in our organic gardening compost and cause them harm or grief.
So, on with the show. As you undoubtedly know by now, having read our other articles, your organic compost is full of living microorganisms, nematodes, insects and the ‘most uncommon earthworm,’ these are the little beasties that turn our vegetable matter into the life-giving nutrients of the garden, organic compost.
Beatrix prefers to refer to the worms in our garden as, ‘most uncommon.’ Our wonderful friends, the earthworms in our garden, are the very essence of organic gardening compost machines, and for that reason we refer to them as being ‘most uncommon.’
Beatrix would be remiss if she didn’t mention to you that you will need a shovel or a pitchfork in order to turn your organic compost. The object of turning your compost is to provide both moisture and ventilation, air, both of those will be feeding and nourishing the microorganisms that produce your compost. One of the most important things turning your organic compost does is carries the moisture and additional nutrients to the microorganisms and that allows them to not only thrive but to madly procreate.
(Beatrix blushes to mention procreation and asks you to refrain from allowing any young children in your care or household to read this paragraph.)
Unfortunately dear reader this is the point at which Mrs. Beatrix Potts finds that she must become a little bit stern. Many organic vegetable gardeners feel it necessary to ‘stab’ at their compost when turning it. We urge you to think about this for a moment and in the most emphatic way ask you to refrain from doing this. Here is our reasoning, your compost is full of billions of little living beasties, not the least of which is the garden worm. When you stab at your compost with either a shovel, spade, or pitchfork you run the risk of decapitating or possibly severing at the midsection some of those wonderful little creatures that will be turning all of this vegetable matter into our most precious organic gardening fertilizer.
Look for a place where you feel that these microorganisms and, the uncommon earthworm are going to not only be happy but to thrive and put forth an excellent effort digesting the organic material that you feed them. These creatures, the little beasties, will quite literally provide the nutrients that are going to feed the wonderful vegetables in your organic vegetable garden.
Be kind to microorganisms, insects, and the uncommon earthworm because these are the very creatures that will provide you with, as Mr. Melvin Potts is wont to say, “The very life’s blood of your organic vegetable garden.”

Recycle Pumpkins Into Treats & Gifts

Don’t let all your Jack-O-Lanterns, pumpkins, gourds and squashes go to waste after Halloween. There are many ways to recycle them.

Start a new family tradition by recycling your pumpkins at a local farm. Check in your local area and find a farm that will allow you and your children to visit and feed their goats, cows, pigs and other livestock delicious pumpkins. It’s a fun way to share a couple hours with the kids and the livestock get a healthy snack in return. Be sure to remove all candles and candle wax from the pumpkins before you go to the farm.
Save the pumpkin seeds and try growing them next year. Just remove the seeds from your pumpkin and wash them in a colander. Drain well. Place a layer of waxed paper on a cookie sheet. Then, lay your pumpkin seeds out on the waxed paper and allow them to dry. A few times each week, mix up the pumpkin seeds so they get turned. This allows them to dry on both sides. Spread them out in a single layer after mixing. When the seeds are completely dry, put them in a canning jar or plastic zip-lock bag. Store them in a dry, dark area until time to replant in the spring.

Birds love pumpkin seeds, especially larger birds. Attract interesting bird varieties to your bird feeders by mixing some pumpkin seeds in with their regular seed. Its always inspiring to see your own work and its always nice to work in an environment that relates to your personality.What I did since Im a vegetable lover is that I selected a permanent location in my back yard and mapped out two 4×5 ft garden beds with a height of 2ft. Using cobble stones, cement, and big milestones I constructed the frame of the garden beds then built a small pond in front of the 2 beds with a height of 12 inches that ran through the middle of the pre-mapped area forming a T shaped pond in between the two beds.You may want to try out your own creativity and ideas to create your own landscaped raised vegetable garden beds.
II. After construction, its now time for you to apply the organic planting technique. Look for loam type of soil, since this type of soil is a combination of silt, sand, and clay, it makes it perfect for planting because of its fine and course qualities. Then mix it with decomposing leaves, compost, or cow manure and then add the final touch, add earthworms to the soil to help with the decomposition of dead organic matter and help with the mixing of your nutrient rich soil.Raised Garden Beds are suitable for organic planting because it allows you to control the soil that you use for your plants. The soil mixture that I used was a combination of cow and horse manure, decomposing pile of vegetables, loam, and compost, a big pile of leaves, and lots and lots of earthworms.III. Once everything is set, you can now plant! While waiting for your seeds to grow, you can finish your landscaping by adding the final touches.What I did for my landscape is I connected the two garden beds with a bridge and placed several bonsai trees to make the entire settings look like two small islands. Then, for the final touch I added figurines to imitate little people in the island and Japanese Koi fishes in the pond. After several weeks, my plants started growing and made the entire landscape come to life!So you see, there are a lot of uses for Raised Garden Beds its clearly not only for gardening and organic planting; you can also use it for landscaping it all just depends on how you look at it.
