Swamp Cooler Motor Repair Guide
When you have the tools for the job, and a good set of instructions, you can repair your swamp cooler motor on your own. There are some issues that are common to swamp cooler motors, but there are fixes for these too.
Items Needed:
• belt (if necessary)
• wrench
• water pump (if necessary)
• asphalt based sealant
• wet vacuum
The top priority would be to locate leaks that may be around the motor.
First: Pan
The first thing to do is to dump your catch pan. After you have done this, then use the wet vacuum to get the rest of it out. Make sure it is dry before you begin the next part.
Second: Seal
This is the time for you to find any leaks that there might be and get them sealed up. To do this, you will use the sealant that is asphalt based. Make sure that you use a generous application of the sealant. If you neglect to apply more than adequate sealant, the area may leak again. After dealing with the leaks, it will be time to take a look at the belt.
Third: Inspection
Check the belt over for any areas that have splits or cracks in them. If these are not there, then you are fine. If they are there, then you need to replace the belt.
Fourth: Old Belt
Use your wrench to get the motor mounts loose so that you can get the belt off easily. Now, remove the belt and take it with you to find the right new one.
Fifth: New Belt
Put the new belt on in the same manner that you took the old one off. Be sure that it is snug fitting before you tighten everything back down. After you have it on there snugly, you will tighten the belt and the mounts so that it is held properly in place. Now that you have taken care of the leaks and the belt, it is time to look at the water pump.
Sixth: Hot Air
If your issue with the swamp cooler motor is the hot air that it is always blowing, then you may need to look more closely at your water pump. Turn it to the lowest setting that it has and see if you are still getting hot air from it. If yes, then go to the next step.
Seventh: Off
Make sure that you turn the water pump off then take it out. Disconnect all hoses to it too.
Eighth: Testing
Put the water pump in water and then turn it on again. If it begins to run properly, then you are more than likely experiencing a problem that is due to some type of clog. Clean out the lines and hoses.
If your water pump still will not run, then you are going to need to replace it. This is just the same as with the belt. Take it with you to buy the new pump, then put it in like you took the other one out.
Vegetable Gardening: Can I Grow Celery?
How do you determine which vegetables you grow in your home garden? I was recently watching a television program about gardening and the host was interviewing a home owner and the vegetable garden they had planted. The host was asking what the homeowner had planted and like clockwork the homeowner pointed out that in row 1 they had this vegetable and in row 2 they had another and so on, and that got me thinking about vegetables that we as home gardeners rarely plant.
When I plant my vegetables I, probably like most, plant vegetables that I enjoy eating the most, and completely overlook those vegetables that I eat but not probably as often as the most popular like tomatoes and peppers.
I have recently designated one row in my home vegetable garden to those vegetable plants that I eat, although not a lot of, to help reduce the costs I would normally incur on my shopping bill. Celery falls into that category. I do not eat a lot of it, and one single plant gives me plenty for an entire season.
Celery is a cooler temperature plant and grows better in temperatures 60 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. It is recommended that soil they are planted in remain moist at all times, and it usually takes anywhere from 100 to 150 days to fully mature. If you live in an area like me where planting begins around the end of April to early May, you will want to start celery as soon as the fear of frost subsides.
Now I won’t actually harvest the celery until the warmer months, which is ok, I just know that I need to make sure that the soil the celery is planted in is moist and receives little sunlight during the day so I make sure I plant it in a shadier area of my garden. If you don’t have a shaded area you can cover leaves with newspaper.
You will know it is time to harvest the celery when the stalks look light yellow. When that occurs cut the plant off just above the roots and you are all set.
Celery is just one of those vegetables that you might not have thought of when it comes to planting produce that you like to eat. Can you think of some others that you eat yet not a lot of? Remember a seed for a vegetable plant can produce hundreds of dollars worth of product and costs just a few cents per seed. So use your home vegetable garden this season to save a few bucks and plant those rare vegetables that you eat only once in a while.

Follow Packaging Directions Carefully
One key thing with planting seeds for your gardening needs is to pay careful attention to the seed packaging. It can be tempting to go ahead and plant your seeds early. This will lead to disaster.
Ideally, you want to plant seeds outdoors that are ready. Make certain you follow the dates. Go for the upper end range of the dates. For example, if the gardening seed package says to plant between March 30 and April 15, you should plant closer to April 15.
Learn Your Gardening Zone
If you look through gardening books and on plant packaging labels, you will discover that each section of the US has different zones. Depending on the zone you live in, will determine when it’s a good time to plant your garden. Don’t give into temptation and plant too early. You risk a late frost or even snow storm interrupting your gardening plans. You will end up starting all over.
Consider Indoor Seedlings
If you’re really itching to get your gardening started, consider indoor seedlings. You can start seedlings inside. Set seedlings in protected outside area during the day. Bring in at night or on cold days. This will let you get a head start on your garden. Yet, you won’t risk your plants dying or planting your garden too early.
